And the Henri goes to...


It was one of the first mild nights in Hamburg and when you left the Deutsche Schauspielhaus at three in the morning, it did good to stroll through the balmy air. The stern and Gruner + Jahr had for the first time presented the newly sponsored Henri Nannen Award at a great event to honor journalists’ exceptional work. And all that had been seen, heard and experienced was on your mind and longed to be sorted, somewhat. The Foreign Secretary, who was in the middle of campaigning in North-Rhine Westphalia came, had a croaky, hoarse voice and yet even so what he said here in Hamburg will be remembered. And the publisher Peter Scholl-Latour, who received a special award for his life’s work, stood on stage and talked. And talked. And talked. And you would have listened to him another hour, because every one of his stories, every one of his witticisms and especially his voice reminded you of all the years you spent in front of the television trying to understand the world.
