Reich-Ranicki Honored for his Life’s Work


The German “Pope of Literature” Marcel Reich-Ranicki was honored with the Henri Nannen Award for his Life’s Work. The laudation was held by the Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, who sometimes didn’t even let the talkative critic of the critics get a word in edgewise.

For the fourth year now the publishing house Gruner + Jahr and the magazine stern have presented the Henri Nannen Award. The twelve awardees were honored during a festive event at the Deutsche Schauspielhaus Hamburg to which 1200 well-known guests from media, culture, politics and business were invited.

In total 830 pieces of work by journalists from 181 newspapers and magazines in Germany, Austria and Switzerland were submitted. “This large number of entries is an indication that high-quality journalism isn’t waning during a time of dramatic change in the media landscape, and perhaps as a reaction of the best even more cultivated than ever,” commented former Gruner + Jahr CEO Bernd Kundrun.
