This, however, is not always matter of course but in many countries threatened by despotism and the arbitrariness of state authorities. This is the reason why we also annually present a Henri Nannen Award to a colleague who has in an exceptional way literally stood up and spoken out for press freedom somewhere in the world.
With a further Henri Nannen Award we also honor a journalist whose life’s work in the area of print media has had profound impact and left lasting impressions. For it may be the self-respect of a journalist to work for the day merely to be forgotten the next. Yet, it is often only in hindsight that we realize just how important such journalistic contributions were in shaping the future."
